What F1 could learn from MotoGP

Within the last week, we have lost both Marussia and Caterham from the F1 Grid, and reports have shown the 6th placed Force India could’ve joined them on the sidelines for the United States and Brazilian Grand Prixs. This places us with an 18 car grid for the next couple of weeks, and what could’ve been only 16.

In the last few months, we have seen reports that we could have 3 car teams sometime in the near future. A few years ago I was thinking that it’d be amazing to have the 3 car teams, but when these reports came out, and when Marussia and Caterham went into administration, I had a long hard look in the mirror, and realised how much of a bad idea it was.

Come 2011, the MotoGP field was dying out with only 16 or 17 regulars in each event. In 2012 however, they brought in the CRT regulations, which brought MotoGP back to life, and now we are seeing grids of up to 25 bikes, even after Suzuki, Aprilia and Kawasaki left (note, Suzuki and Aprilia will return in MotoGP for 2015).

However with the MotoGP Grid, we usually see 2 bike teams, but with teams like LCR, Ioda they run only 1 bike teams, and occasionally in MotoGP we see the odd wildcard racer.

But surely with the Marussia and Caterham teams folding, we really need more cars, so isn’t 3 car teams a good idea? No. No it isn’t. If anything, let some smaller teams run 1 car teams so more people can afford it, and may want to race, effectively making F1 even bigger. We need the back guys, or they will fall through, then the current midfield will fall through and eventually teams like Red Bull may call it quits because they may be the slowest of what could be 5 teams in 2019 or something. Let wildcards enter the races enter the races as well.

Formula 1 needs a 22-24 car grid, and 3 car teams is not the way forward, (if you are a MotoGP fan, yes, I admit, Repsol Honda did run 3 bikes in 2011). Teams should have the choice of whether to run 1, 2 or 3 car teams, otherwise Formula 1 is a ticking time bomb.
